I didn’t see the Alien vs. Musical at the 2015 Fringe Festival, where it received rave reviews, and was looking forward to seeing it this year in what everyone says is an expanded story. The premise is fantastic: one by one an alien kills off the characters in musical theatre land, including Elphaba, Jean Valjean, Harold Hill, Tracy Turnblad, Danny Zuko and more. While there is some cute choreography and I loved the idea of the show, it isn’t well-executed and much of the singing is a stretch for the singers. The songs by Erik Przytulski are bright and bouncy with fun lyrics. Book by Erik Przytulski & Steve Troop is noticeably thin due to the weak performances but the alien is terrific. The standout is Allie Costa as Annie. See it for the fun of it but without high performance expectations and you’ll have a great time. It’s perfect Fringe material. Through June 26. Tickets: http://hff15.org/2202.
